Season One Finale of Rock That Doesn't Roll
Or how one musician is using his CCM past to fuel new music today.
Hello Readers/Listeners-
Leah and I are just putting the finishing touches on episode six of Rock That Doesn’t Roll. It’s the final official episode of season one of the podcast. I think Leah would agree that we’ve saved the best for last. This episode is the story of Pedro The Lion and David Bazan as you’ve never heard it before.
One of the big subtexts of this episode is the different purposes musicians have for creating their music. Some use it as a vehicle for conveying information- in Christian music I call that religious instruction. But others write music for self expression alone. That’s a core part of what made rock and roll revolutionary when it first emerged. This episode is about how David Bazan was pulled back and forth by both of these forces.
This season has been a big journey- and more work than Leah or I ever anticipated. But we’ve been happy to get to do this hard work thanks to our grant from PRX’s Big Questions Project and The John Templeton Foundation. We have a great team working with us to make this show the best it can be. So we are very thankful. And very tired!
But one nice thing about The Big Questions Project is that it funds TWO seasons of our podcast. So we’re going to dive into working on Season Two in January. We’re very excited about the next season because Leah’s book, “God Gave Rock And Roll To You,” will be published and we’ll be able to use the results of her research in the podcast.
So we’ll be working on that soon, but we don’t want to wait until mid-2024 to talk with you again. We’re planning to do some bonus interview-only episodes that expand on some of the topics in season one. Those will go up on our Patreon, so if you’re interested in hearing them, join us over there.
Speaking of our Patreon, that will always be the first place we post our episodes- including episode six, once it’s actually finished. We also could sell merch through that site, but we want to know what listeners are interested in getting. If you would wear a T-shirt or a pin, let us know in the comments. I think the support we get through Patreon will determine if we are able to make more than two seasons of Rock That Doesn’t Roll. It’s a huge time commitment and Leah and I both have kids we have to provide for.
So thank you for chipping in however you’re able. If you’re skint, leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or tell some friends about the show. Also, if you have a story to share about CCM or just your reaction to the podcast, leave us a message on our hotline: (629) 777-6336.
Thanks again for listening,
Andrew Gill
